Every time I cross over from Rusafa (Baghdad, east of the Tigris) to Karkh (Baghdad, west of the Tigris), my eyes are attracted to a very long line of trucks carrying bricks and other building materials, waiting for their turn to unload in a location that is known only for its magical quality to the greater majority of Iraqis, a locatoin inside that fairyland, the Green Zone. It is said there are majestic theatres and luminous malls behind those illusive walls that are defended by US tanks and Asian security personnel. Some say there are five star hotels and casinos where sparkling wines are poured out into cut crystal goblets. Some say you would find a smaller version of any American city, its supermarkets and drive-in -take-aways complete with milkshakes. Is there an aquarium?? Why not! Is there a Disney Land?? Why not! Did they not come in solely to remove the tyrant? To rid the world of the threat of non-existing WMDs in the hands of a madman? What is it they are building? Even the labour is imported, Iraqis are so excluded. Could it be they are building the largest US embassy in the world?? The only signs of construction in our ruined city. Our buildings are in ruins, our electricity nonexsistent, our sewage system flowing backwards, our drinking water would poison any but us - we have developed an immunity....

Of old, wise men said “Don’t love anybody in caravan company (during travel), to avoid suffering when they reach their destinations”. In my opinion they are right. You should always stay away from pain of departure - at least you protect yourself - if possible. But is it possible? And like many people I tried to follow this proverb, when possible. But it is always impossible because we live in a moving caravan called Iraq. Our life is just a big caravan, and each of us has his own direction, imposed upon him by force. What you mean you leave?? You serious?? If you are in Iraq you will live in departure feeling every minute. Die…leave…die…leave ….Oh God how can we avoid this lasting pain … it will kill us like any explosion. We just run from death that is waiting for us everywhere in the street, at school,at university, at work, in the market, in the park, and even at home … Nowhere here you could feel safe.
